Treat preference: I love treats and will comment on them, it just sometimes takes me a little time (see title of this post)

I will create:

A fanwork of the following type(s): fic

In one or more of the following parts of fandom: Books: Doyle - Canon; The Seven-Percent Solution and others of Meyer's work; A Study in Emerald or anything else from Shadows Over Baker Street; Lindsey Faye's work; Enola Holmes book series; Pentecost & Parker series; Mycroft Holmes series; Bonnie MacBird Art in the Blood series; Mycroft Holmes series by Kareem Abdul Jabbar; if it's short enough to easily read in the time available and readily found, I am happy to read anything for Holmestice.
TV/Film: Granada TV Show; Ritchie Films; Rathbone Films; Miss Sherlock; Great Mouse Detective
Comics: Shirley & Jamil; Watson's Sketchbook; any others that are easily found (I love comics)
Other: Sherlock & Co podcast; Great Ace Attorney; Moriarty the Patriot; Sherlock Holmes: Chapter One and Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened

For one or more of the following characters or relationships: Holmes/Watson and Holmes & Watson are good across pretty much any adaptation (and expies thereof, eg Holmes/Mikotoba in Great Ace Attorney); also Mycroft & Sherlock (I love writing sibling interactions!); also Holmes/Watson/Mary, Holmes/Watson/Lestrade, Holmes/Watson/Mary/Lestrade; I am pretty much always down for writing gen fic, too, if anyone wants something focused on the Irregulars, Stanley Hopkins, etc.

I like working with one or more of the following categories: Angst; Post-Reichenbach; Alternate Universe; Romance; Hurt/Comfort; Established Relationship; Crossover; Friendship; Case Fic; First Time; Friendship; Drug Addiction; Sibling Relationships; Queer Characters

With any of the following ratings: 1) suitable for general audiences; 2) non-explicit sexual content; 3) explicit sexual content; 4) mild to moderate violence or depictions of non-sexual mature themes; 5) moderate to explicit graphic violence or depictions of non-sexual mature themes

I am willing to create for the following squicks and/or kinks: bdsm; bloodplay; torture; domestic abuse; alcohol/drug abuse; self-harm; suicide; character death; child abuse; I am not the right person for writing incest, and while I can absolutely write noncon, I prefer not to write between requested romantic pairings (eg I am fine with dubcon Holmes/Watson if it's omegaverse, fuck or die, pon farr etc, and could quite easily write one of them being raped in the context of Villains Did It, but would not be comfortable writing noncon between Holmes and Watson)

I want to receive:

A fanwork of the following type(s): art, fic, vids, graphics

In one or more of the following parts of fandom:
Books: Canon; The Seven-Percent Solution and other Meyers work; A Study in Emerald and anything else from Shadows Over Baker Street; Lindsey Faye's work; Art in the Blood series by MacBird; Mycroft Holmes series by Kareem Abdul Jabbar.
TV/Film:Granada TV Show; Rathbone Films; Miss Sherlock; Great Mouse Detective
Comics: Shirley & Jamila; Watson's Sketchbook
Other: Sherlock & Co podcast; Sherlock Holmes: Chapter one and Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened; The Great Ace Attorney

For one or more of the following characters or relationships: If you wanted to write me some Mycroft & Sherlock fic, in pretty much any of my requested fandoms, I would absolutely love it! Them as children; them as young adults pursuing their respective careers; them working a case together; them trolling each other (the radio play with Rathbone where Mycroft sends Sherlock to solve a murder because he Doesn't Want To and Thinks There's Spies, and John ends up arrested? Beautiful sibling behavior); them talking during the world wars; one mourning the other! I love anything with the brothers.

That being said, I also love Holmes &/ Watson to pieces. I love them as platonic best friends; as queerplatonic partners; as full on queer love story dodging the blow-back of their time period. I also love seeing takes on polycules involving them, whether it's Holmes/Watson/Lestrade, or Holmes/Watson/Mary (or Holmes/Watson/Mary/Lestrade, let's go for broke!).

Case fic is great. Relationship fic is great. Making something Wild and Fun is great. Eldritch horror is great. Werewolves are always a huge draw.

I like stuff in the following categories: Angst; Post-Reichenbach; Alternate Universe; Romance; Hurt/Comfort; Established Relationship; Crossover (especially between various Holmes canons!); Friendship; Case Fic; First Time; Friendship; Drug Addiction; Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence; Bondage; Surgery; Watson Is a Competent Doctor

I wouldn’t mind any of the following squicks and/or kinks: dubcon; non-con/rape (so long as it is not between a requested romantic relationship); bdsm; bloodplay; torture (no one has managed to squick me! Not a challenge, just, if you've wanted to write something gory and dramatic? Go for it!); domestic abuse (not between requested relationships); alcohol/drug abuse; self-harm; suicide; character death; child abuse

Please include further details about what you’d like to receive: My only hard Do Not Want is incest between the Holmes siblings. If writing child death/rape; animal death/rape, especially pets; or a completely hopeless ending, please warn for it, as these can be triggering to me. I will still read, I just need to be in the right headspace.

For canon, Meyers, Faye, Mycroft Holmes, and Granada: I love more like the cases we see. I love relationship building. I love people taking these details and throwing them in a blender with their own favorite genre (werewolf Watson is a favorite of mine, but I love seeing other people make AUs!). I love extrapolation of queerness into the canon and canon-typical stories.

For Miss Sherlock: I really loved this delightful mess! They clearly wanted/expected a second season; want to extrapolate how it goes? Want to delve into how Sherlock got her name? Want to give me more of the delightful sibling relationship? Give Wato-san some closure? Have Wato-san and Sherlock figure out a romantic relationship? I would be down for any and all of this.

For Chapter One and The Awakened: My eldritch horror babies! I love this Sherlock, with his youth, his fear of water, his fear of hereditary insanity, his autistic swagger that has netted him one (1) friend! Jonathan is fascinating. Mycroft and Sherlock need to get a chance to fix their relationship. Mycroft needs to experience The Horrors. Sherlock and John need to have more eldritch adventures. Sherlock should do more magic and bleed from his eyes.

For A Study in Emerald: I would loooove to see what more of the canon characters are up to. Where's Mycroft? Where's Irene Adler? Show me more of the Restorationists! Let John write more plays! Do more with the hints that Moriarty can see other universes and their roles in those. I would love any of it.

For Rathbone Holmes: I love the accidental hint that they're immortal; if you want to run with that, have fun! Otherwise giving Watson WWI trauma. Giving them more backstory; giving them more front story after World War II! Giving this universe a Mycroft!

For Great Ace Attorney: I just want to see Holmes and Mikotoba have a good ending. I love everyone else in these crazy games (Kazuma needs so much therapy, and I love that he's messy and complicated, and so is Barok, and neither of them asked for these scars but they still have to carry them), but since we're focusing on Holmes for Holmestice: adapting more canon stories to this universe! Letting Holmes explore Japan!

For Moriarty the Patriot: I honestly would mostly want to see more of Mycroft here. I ship him with Albert. I'm fascinated by this family history; by his relationship with Sherlock; by his place in creating MI6.

For Great Mouse Detective: I love Basil and Dawson. There is not enough of them in the world, or of their little mouse society. What war was Dawson fighting? What comes next for them? Dawson deserves to cuddle Basil.

For Shirley & Jamila: More canon adventures adapted for children! If they managed it with Charles Augustus Milverton, it can be managed wtih anything! Alternately, the girls all grown up.

For Watson's Sketchbook: I love the queerness here! More of that? More delving into the changes, such as Holmes shooting Milverton directly, or Holmes' suicidality?

For Sherlock & Co: I would love to see something with Sherlock/John/Mariana as a queer trio, be it a full polycule, queerplatonic, what have you.

For those not writing fic: I am terrible at giving prompts! I love non-fic mediums but cannot do any of them! I have a lot of fic if you want to draw something? But also I will love anything you create for me, so if you're inspired by my ramblings above, go, be free!

General Things I Like: Queerness. Historical accuracy. Alternately, very deliberately throwing historical accuracy out the window because Steampunk or Werewolves or They're Mice; commit to a bit and I am along for the ride happily. Blood. Medical adventures, including surgery (nothing so intimate as one's hands in another's body). Heartbeats. Werewolves! Fae. Wings and wingfic. Interactions with gods. Eldritch horror. Body horror. Pregnancy, including mpreg, including omegaverse. Aliens. Alien biology. Playing with biology! Hair washing. Cuddling. Tender care. Care tailored to an individual person, which may not seem tender but is full of love. Friendships. Time travel/time loops.

Special requests: I've loved every time participating and am very much looking forward to seeing what you give me this time!

usually very late in the mornings!

I like working with one or more of the following categories: Fluff; Angst; Post-Reichenbach; Alternate Universe; Romance; Hurt/Comfort; Established Relationship; Crossover; Friendship; Humor; Case Fic; First Time; Friendship; Drug Addiction; Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence; Bondage; Magic/Fantasy/Occult AU
I am willing to create for the following squicks and/or kinks: bdsm; bloodplay; alcohol/drug abuse; threesomes; polyamory; rough sex; public sex; supernatural sex/sex magic; fetishes; body worship

Please include further details about what you’d like to receive: I'm pretty flexible. I love a good casefic, but I'm equally happy with a warm PWP. Remixed canon stories in AU verses are always welcome. Character voice matters more to me more than plot really. I do love a good magical or fantasy or SF AU. I'm just happy to see these characters in a new light, doing their thing in an unexpected way. I'm always up for travel stories. Whether it's solving a weird mystery or exploring a new kink or taking care of each other in some especially them kind of way, I'm here for it. I love seeing alternate points of view and subversive views of canon. For art, anything on the themes listed above - atmospheric, sexy, funny, whatever strikes you. I love romantic settings, intimacy, costumes. Also fond of spooky. I would especially love art for any of my fics or any of the lesser-known book canons I’ve listed here - or even some I didn't, I'm an adventurous adventuress. For podfics, any of mine that you like, no restrictions. For music, surprise me!

DNW (creating or receiving): Non-con, graphic torture, graphic child or animal abuse (sexual or not), major (permanent) character death, bleak hopeless endings

I wouldn’t mind any of the following squicks and/or kinks: Anything not in my DNWs is fair game in the service of angst :)

Please include further details about what you’d like to receive:
Ms. Holmes and Ms. Watson - Apt. 2B: Assuming it’s not currently playing in a theatre near you, you can buy the script here for US$10. I recommend skipping the Playwright’s Notes until you’ve read it through, they contain a major spoiler. F!Holmes and F!Watson in 2021! Fun/ny! Meta references! Sherlock being brilliant, bizarre, and emotionally stunted! Convoluted dramatic showdown with quintuple crossings! Gay kissing!
Fic ideas:
*Sherlock being made unambiguously aroace (whether or not anyone around knows the words)
*Joan realizing she really was jealous of Irene (and it being requited or not)
*Joan & Sherlock becoming closer
*More of whatever the frig was going on with Sherlock & Irene
*The sequel that was cruelly set up but will never happen

All purpose likes/prompts:
*epistolary, 5+1, experiments with style & format
*Meta (as in commentary or as in referencing the Sherlock Holmes multiverse)
*Sherlock being abrasive, solitary, super smart
*Relationships that are unconventional, complex, difficult to define, involve competing needs, require negotiation, that revolve around shared interests, that are extremely strong
*metamours Sherlock & Mary getting along so well it's scary
*TGG/TFP-esque convoluted scenarios by Moriarty/other villains
*forced to make difficult choices that have no get-out-of-jail-free, best-of-both-worlds escape hatch
*Jo(a/h)n confronting Sherlock’s enemies
*Going through hell with or for each other

Vid likes/prompts:
Loving, understated, heartbreaking, opinionated, euphoric, we’re-adrenaline-junkies-and-never-gonna-die… Also, vids that either work with the lyrics to show why the song is a great fit to the canon, or pointedly interpret either the lyrics or visuals differently than the artist intended. Special effects, experiments with the possibilities of the medium.
I love being introduced to new music via fanvids. Or taking an already popular song and tricking me into associating it with the vid & fandom in the future. I don’t listen to much music otherwise and the only thing that really unites my taste is that I like when it’s easy to make out the lyrics. If you’re really looking for ideas, artists I have been known to return to include Taylor Swift, Imagine Dragons, The Ark, Carbon Leaf, and The Longest Johns.

Music likes/prompts:
Cozy or angsty or adrenaline-filled vibes... Songs that tell a self-contained story... As far as I can tell, fan music seems to have dropped off even more dramatically than other mediums after S2, it would be cool to get something that references the later seasons (or Ms. Holmes & Ms. Watson)!

DNW: PWP (explicit content is fine, just not as the sole focus), gore, Mary portrayed as worse than John & Sherlock, Sally portrayed as worse than Sherlock, canon negativity

Another dogsitting weekend. Luci is here and being very sweet and adorable. She's still afraid to go into Sipuli's territory and usually has to be carried into the kitchen (Sipuli hissed at her once last time she was here). It's overcast and around 7°, but she is perfectly happy to walk and not at all eager to come back even when the ground is still all damp from rain. We were out more than an hour yesterday. She's only a Havanese! The size of a footstool! Her little legs are only about as long as my hand. You'd think she'd get tired before that.

I've been knitting some socks, and I keep making mistakes and having to redo things. I do want to have some more socks, both for me and to give away, but I don't really want to make them. I want to make sweaters. It's much more exciting and rewarding to work on them.

I am itching to replace two favorite sweaters that I have lost and which both left big gaps in my wardrobe, a v-neck cardigan (lightweight heather-gray alpaca, made by Wax) and a sturdy zip-up jacket with a funnel neck (brown worsted Andean wool, knitted by me in... 2013?). Both of these had flaws that I ignored for years but which would be fixed in the new versions: fit problems and lack of pockets.

But also, I really DO want us to use up our yarn stash and not just keep buying more. Maybe even get it to fit in the barrister case (which, again, is six feet tall, so not fitting in it is ludicrous). It's incredible that we have so many little scraps of different yarns that they more than fill the case while not being able to produce any sizable project! I suggested that we try to sort it by gauge/type later today, and Wax agreed. So maybe we'll manage to squeeze it all into the barrister case soon.

Pedro Martín, Mexikid Dreams (2026)

Autobiographical graphic novel about a Mexican-American kid growing up in a strawberry sharecropping family in 1970s California. Pedro is a delight, an inveterate daydreamer who nevertheless manages to be a keen observer of the world around him (when he does take notice of it), who has never once managed to track on a single earnest lecture given to him by an adult ever.

(Adult lectures quickly devolve into BLAH BLAH BLAH with the occasional very concerning phrase left in for the reader, and at the end, when the adult asks if Pedro got all that, Pedro always answers with a smile and a thumbs up. This child got nothing of that, is not in the LEAST concerned that he got nothing of that, and even when it becomes clear later that the lecture might have contained RELEVANT, NECESSARY, or even CRITICAL information, Pedro just shrugs: lectures are just one of those inexplicable and incomprehensible adult behaviors that has nothing to do with him. SMILE-AND-THUMBS-UP!)

The story is wide-ranging, covering the day-to-day reality of strawberry picking, Pedro's budding music career as a trombonist, run-ins with Immigration police, and the humor and indignity of being one semi-anonymous child in a crowd of siblings. Pedro is very concerned that he will never escape the strawberry fields, but his father, while demanding that everyone work in the fields to help support the family, is also very supportive of his kids getting out of the fields -- provided that they can come up with a concrete and actionable career plan first! Pedro, whose only ambition in life is to draw superhero comics in front of the TV set, is convinced that he will never come up with a father-approved career plan and thus is doomed to pick strawberries forever...

His father does approve the cartooning plan, mostly on the advice of Pedro's older siblings, who assure him that it is possible to make a living drawing pictures. btw, Pedro's dad is a great character: a weirdo with a kooky sense of humor, who sneakily instigates strawberry fights between his children when he feels they need a pick-me-up.)

Sequel to Mexikid, which I haven't read, but now very much want to.

Taras Drokhasko (illus. Marjana Drokhasko), Who Will Make the Snow? (2013 / 2023)

Translated from the Ukranian, fantastical children's picture book about a pair of moles and all their forest friends. Charming story with a lot of neat elements -- [personal profile] grrlpup and I keep referencing incidents from it in casual conversation -- but it failed to hit for me, entirely because I couldn't turn off my realist mental track. Which is 100% a me problem, and 0% a problem with the book.

Randy Cecil, Lucy (2016)

Simple picture book for young children about a street dog who had once been a beloved pet, the girl who feeds it, and her father the talented juggler with a bad case of stage-fright. The story had me on tenterhooks all the way through, in a ships-passing-in-the-night, competing-needs sort of way--

But then happy endings all around, as all three characters come together to become the solutions to each other's problems. I enjoyed this one lots, even as [personal profile] grrlpup and I ruefully agree that the father never will get to see Cairo, Paris, etc.: they have a dog now.

Dear Festividder,

First off, thank you for making me a vid! I love vids, and quite honestly I would be happy to see a vid in any of these fandoms. I have no qualms about oft-vidded songs, either.

Please include further details about what you’d like to receive: I love anything that plays with a detail in canon that intrigues or bugs you. Any idea you've been wanting to write but haven't got to. Anything that's self-indulgent or odd. The classic unexpected love confession is also a fav; one of them trying to court the other; one of them realizing they're queer or in love. Figuring out how to be physical with each other and how to take care of each other. I like a catharsis and a happy ending. If you enjoyed writing it, I'll enjoy reading it.

Special requests: No bittersweet/tragic endings.
cimorene: white lamb frolicking on green grass (wool)
[personal profile] cimorene
I got the brilliant idea to knit wool socks with cats for Christmas for every adult in my wife's family (2 brothers, 2 SILs, 5 niblings). First pair were accidentally okay, but I just spent a week making a second pair all the way to cutting the yarn and starting to weave in ends when I realized they were too fucked up (I didn't have enough short rows in the heel, so instead of a 90° angle between the foot and leg it was more like 130° and the extra fabric was bunched up on top of the foot) and had to unravel them all the way. I don't know whether to try again immediately or make some for myself or Wax first so I can have a win. Very humbling.

I have also (successfully) knitted two sweaters for myself since my dad died, both stashbusting! (Yay! But it turns out the stash still doesn't fit in our barrister case even though it's like six feet tall, and even now that there's not enough of any one yarn to make another sweater.)

First I made this natural wool sweater (from the Stripe Hype Sweater pattern by Veronika Lindberg). This is from a batch of undyed lanolin-in wool that we bought at a local sheep farm two Easters ago (although I had to add stripes of the leftovers from my Stentorp fair isle vest because it turned out we only bought 700m; now there's a bunch of it left in several colors, though I think not quite enough for another whole sweater).

Then I made this chartreuse sweatshirt (from the Marseille sweater pattern by PetiteKnit). I unraveled a merino cardigan I had made several years ago (cat snag damage & wouldn't stay buttoned at the top button), washed the yarn, discarded the messed up bits, and bought a little more to make contrast stripes.

It's not really quite cold enough yet to wear either of these inside without having to pull it off and on alternately several times an hour. It's just the season for them outside!... Except it's also VERY windy. Also not cold enough for my wool socks.

I am always gleeful if someone takes one of my stories and illustrates or podfics it. I also enjoy it when someone takes a drabble and treats it like the gigantic lonely plotbunny it is. I have no idea what someone would do with graphics, or music but I’m happy to find out.

When it comes to vids, my favorites are the ones who play with lots of sources (I have found wonderful thing to watch that way) Try to avoid songs which are tiktok, youtube super popular right now, though, if you want to put everything to a song.

Watson seen through Holmes’s or another person’s eyes is also a happy happy place.

I wouldn’t mind any of the following squicks and/or kinks: character death; child abuse; violence done by the bad guys if you’re writing hurt comfort and focus on the comfort part. Don’t need details. Medical stuff is okay.

Please include further details about what you’d like to receive: I like fluff, I like canon divergence, humor, competent Watson, fond Holmes, I like the comfort part of hurt comfort best, I like well done angst, including character death but with a resolved or hopeful ending. I love chronology explanations and untold stories mentioned in canon. I very much like “what comes next” stories set after the end of an episode or story.

Special requests: I am most comfortable with ACD Canon and canon divergence. Thanks.

It's only been... okay, I don't want to think how long.

We are preparing to take the beta update page and the beta inbox out of beta with the next code release. We don't have an exact date yet, but this is your last chance to tell us about problems!

To enable the beta versions: go to Beta Features and enable the "new Create Entries" beta test for the new update page and the "New Inbox Page" for the, well, new inbox page.

If this is your first time using the beta update page: nearly everything on it can be adjusted, moved, or removed to some degree. The upper right side of the update form has a " ⚙️ Rearrange Panels" link.

Not every panel is enabled by default! If you don't see something you're used to finding, look in the disabled panels. While in Rearrange mode, you can enable or disable panels, drag them to whatever position you want, and generally customize it to your heart's content.

Once we push the button and switch to the new update and inbox pages for everyone, we cannot keep the old ones available. We are so close to finishing the decade-long "get rid of the undocumented custom templating language from 1996 that no one else uses" modernization project that's been sapping our collective will to live that we can taste it, and we can't convert the old update page and the updated inbox page is the converted version. This is your last chance to alert us of problems. If you let us know after the switch goes live, we'll still fix it, but we can't guarantee how fast. Prevent future problems and test drive them now!

We're off to a new academic year in alumni bookgroup, which means a new topic: the Harlem Renaissance! These two readings (one assigned, one not) predate the Harlem Renaissance, but speak to the social climate it existed in, and thus to some of its concerns.

Ida B. Wells, Southern Horrors: Lynch Law In All Its Phases (1892)

(content warning for sexual and racial violence)

In 1892, Wells, a co-editor of the Memphis Negro newspaper, Free Speech, published what proved to be its final editorial, challenging "that old threadbare lie" that Negro men rape white women. She asserted instead that "If Southern men are not careful, a conclusion might be reached which will be very damaging to the moral reputation of their women." She was safely in Manhattan at the time the issue saw print, but her co-editor had to flee a white mob. The mob then went on to ransack and destroy the Free Speech offices, after which the papers' white creditors foreclosed on and sold the paper.

Later that year, a collection was taken up in New York state to fund Wells writing a pamphlet expanding on her editorial, and that became Southern Horrors. ( Afro-American Sampsons and white Delilahs )

Southern Horrors was presented as one reading in a unit about propaganda, alongside several readings from W.E.B. du Bois and an article by Aida Overton Walker. Among these readings, there were several different takes on what is required to move public opinion (and thus law and other social institutions). Southern Horrors beautifully embodies a quote that Wells made on the lecture circuit: “The way to right wrongs is to turn the light of truth upon them.” (“Miss Ida B. Wells, A Lecture,” Washington Bee, October 22, 1892.) Southern Horrors is very evidence-heavy, with most of its word count spent on describing specific cases of white-on-Black violence. I'm very much minded of a section of Catherine D'Ignazio's and Lauren F. Klein's Data Feminism (2020), pointing out that collecting and publishing data for social change is something that power-holding classes are seldom required to do, that exercise of data collection being reserved for people low in the matrix of power and domination. In fact, Data Feminism offers Wells' phamplet of anti-lynching statistics, The Red Record, as an early example of the phenomenon!

Of course, there was much discussion in book group of whether we have currently entered a post-truth society in the US, where facts no longer matter. Can change be facilitated by throwing data and evidence at it? I personally feel that statistics and evidence still matter, but an emotional framing for those statistics is critical: an appeal to the listeners' previously-held values and beliefs. I do believe that Southern Horrors does that -- certainly that title is meant to evoke an emotional reaction! And in the text, Wells is clearly trying to incite a righteous feeling of injustice. The evidence she brings forth is not dry statistics, but stories of betrayal -- by a lover, by society, by the courts -- each designed to inspire an instinctive "That's not right!" in the reader. Her central allusion, Negro Sampsons and white Delilahs, identifies Black men with innocence and white women with female scheming, leveraging a story that is already well known to the presumed-Christian reader.

While its content is heavy, Southern Horrors is really a beautifully constructed and executed piece of rhetorical writing--would it be weird to say I enjoyed it on that level?

Ida B. Wells, The Red Record: Tabulated Statistics and Alleged Causes of Lynching in the United States (1895)

(content warning for racial and sexual violence)

In the writing of the above, I discovered The Red Record exists, and had to see how Wells made use of statistics.

Just let me say right up front: this is a lot more graphic than Southern Horrors. Wells, in order to get ahead of charges of racial bias, gathers her statistics exclusively from white-authored newspaper articles: if a white reporter didn't report it, it doesn't go in the statistics. Further, when she gets into the meat of the book, discussing the myths and realities of lynching, she takes all her accounts of individual lynchings verbatim from white-byline newspaper articles, and... hoo boy, these things are graphic. Graphic, and very nearly ecstatic about the violence they relate. This was a much tougher read than Southern Horrors.

The thesis of this book is to further undermine "that old threadbare lie" that lynching is about protecting the honour of white womanhood, by running the numbers and showing just how infrequently rape (including alleged and attempted) was the offense behind a lynching. In 1983, the year The Red Record focuses on, rape was alleged roughly a third of the time, almost exactly tied for murder. The remaining third of the time, the alleged offense could have been nearly any damn thing at all: wife beating, insulting whites, burglary, stealing, or no offense whatsoever. (Not infrequently, a bystander, friend, or relative would be lynched by frustrated mobs who couldn't lay hands on the person they were pursuing.)

( Lecturing overseas, the WCTU, updated statistics, and how the reader can help )

Again, Wells is savvy and skilled in how she uses and presents data: she has a clear takeaway (lynching is about enforcing a racial hierarchy, not about protecting white women from rape), and presents her statistics to support it. Further, she does not rely on quantitative data alone, but elaborates on the numbers with qualitative data: again, strategies that align very well with current best practices.

I have to say, as unpleasant as this topic has been for itself (dismaying, sobering, sickening, raising complicated feelings about how historical anti-Black violence underpins contemporary anti-Black violence), I've become quite a fan of Wells and her writing: from her passionate prose to her persuasive strategies, she is on point. And to devote her life to this work? I can only imagine the psychological resilience that required.

Little window, poetry, fancy food

Tiny window has been stripped of all putty and loose paint and sanded.

We need to glue and clamp one joint (tomorrow?), and then I can paint it: linseed oil paint, three thin layers, so I hope we get nice weather and it can dry on the balcony this week.

My dad's fandom community invited us to a virtual reading of his poetry today. (He was a grand master of the Science Fiction Poetry Association, past winner of the Rhysling award which is the poetry version of the Hugo and Nebula, published in Asimov's and other major genre publications.) I haven't cried that much in the last week, and was not prepared for how sore my eyes now feel.

We went out to eat yesterday, impulsively. I love serious chefs and their hilarious ideas and hilarious fancy plating. Wax ordered a deconstructed fish (delicious aborre) and chips - but it came with precisely 16 French fries arranged in a Jenga tower. That's not nearly enough chips, dude! Luckily my pizza was way too big for me to finish. For dessert we had an herbal creme brulee with local herbs served with two teensy scoops of sorrel icecream and two lingonberries. It was delicious.
